My Collection: A Novice’s Cologne Wardrobe
Updated: May 16, 2021
For years, the only colognes I could afford were the $5 ‘versions-of’ kind sold in 99¢ stores in Queens. I stopped buying for a long while; then, In late 2020 I picked up a few travel size Nautica flanks and a Halston Z-14 aftershave, all Duane Reade holiday bargains.
This April when I saw a big 8 oz. Grey Flannel splash for sale at $21 (eBay/ForeverLux), I couldn’t resist. At those prices I could also get my long-favorite Joop! Homme (6.7 oz. EDT, $25) and try Eternity Flame (3.4 oz. EDT, $24). Two nostalgic picks and a lucky blind buy got me up and running.
I indulged in generous dousings for a luxurious, affordable, much-needed therapy, got hooked, and started a collection:
Armani: Acqua di Gio
Bentley: Bentley for Men
Boucheron: Pour Homme; Jaïpur
Burberry: Burberry for Men**; Touch
Calvin Klein: Escape; Eternity Flame
Davidoff: Cool Water; Horizon
Geoffrey Beene: Grey Flannel; Eau de Grey Flannel
Guerlain: Habit Rouge; Héritage; Eau de Cologne Imperiale
Joop!: Homme; Jump!
Nicole Miller: For Men
Perry Ellis: 360 Black
